The Year in Review- 2006

The Beowulf splash screen

Most of the first part of the year was spent working on Beowulf. Adding muscles and expressions to 3 characters in the film. It's coming out in 2007 and should be pretty interesting. Who exactly the movie is meant for I'm not too sure, but it was really fun working on it.

Jamie's plane touching down in Houston
In April, I got to meet my friend Jamie out in Texas to pick up his newly restored Bonanza! What a beauty. All new paint scheme and interior. Unfortuneately the flight back was pretty turbulent most of the way...but still fun and always good to catch up with old friends... and of course, talk flying.

My PPL....finally!
FINALLY got my private pilot license on August 1st. Definitely one of the most stressful.... and rewarding days ever!

Pikes fish marketThe Pikes Market waterfront
Got up to Seattle in August to see my brother Gordon, Julie, Daniel and Melissa. We went climbing on Mt. Rainier. Stunningly warm weather and beautiful vistas.

Death Valley
October had a bit of traveling. Took part in the SAR City 06 operation in beautiful Barstow, Ca. Search and Rescue units from all over the Western US took part in 4 days of search and rescue training and exercises. I received my Civil Air Patrol Mission Scanner rating after a couple of flights into the Death Valley area. Lots of fun and met some pretty interesting folks.

Ahhhh ...Friday on the back deckDinner at Nolas in Palo Alto
Nubs and BunsDinner at Suppenkuche
Headed north to the annual Stanford Homecoming weekend  to watch a lackluster Cardinal game, but mostly to catch up with old Alpha Delta Phi friends. Always so cool to see everyone! Pretty amazing we all still get together at least once a year after...what is is now...25!! Wow! Got a good bike ride in with Neil, who I only get to see once a year or so...but it always feels like just yesterday we were hanging out. After the game I headed up to San Francisco to see my nephew Stephen and my old friends Katy and Eduardo. Stephen had started his PhD program at UCSF doing some sort of intense bio research thing. Kids today... what are you gonna do?

Planes taxiing down Palm Springs streetYork and Karen
Flying in the Hughes300Trestles
November brought a trip out to Palm Springs with my sweetie, Karen. We went to the annual AOPA pilot conference. The conference closes down the city streets and all the airplanes...jets...you name it...taxi through the city streets to the conference center. NICE!! Not only does she tolerate my whole pilot geeky-ness, she embraces and surpasses it! She's currently taking a series of aerobatic training lessons...rolls...loops... and loving it. I also started taking helicopter lessons..something I've dreamed about since I was little. Spent Thanksgiving with my good friend Andres and his family, very cool!

I am legend
I've just started work on a new film called I Am Legend. It's based on the Richard Matheson story of the same name about the last man on earth after the world has been ravaged by a virus that turns people into raging vampires. Matheson also wrote What Dreams May Come, Somewhere in Time and Hell House. There have been countless movies and books that took this story as inspiration... The Omega Man, 28 Days Later, the Blade series to name a few. I'll be setting up a few characters and building some pipeline tools...basically helping vampires and mutants walk the earth trying to kill Will Smith. Topped off December with the annual pilgrimage to the L.A. Auto Show with Cole and his Dad, and dinner afterwards.

A wonderful year blessed with great friends and family, good health, safe flying, fun travels, good adventures and lots of love. Add to it rewarding work and occasional good swell.... life is good!
